Research project

From Hegemony to Competition: Transformations of European Public Channels’ Programming Strategies Over the Last 30 Years (EU5) (30PUBTV)

THE PROJECT

The general objective of this project is the analysis of the structural changes that have occurred in the generalist television offer over the last 30 years in the five largest European markets (Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom), to detect the main trends and the role of public television in the competitive context generated after the end of monopolies.

Knowledge of these transformations and the configuration of the new model of general interest television in Europe is one of the key pieces that explain the new landscape of the audiovisual industry and, therefore, the main factors that configure the European identity and popular culture.

METHODOLOGY

The study of television programming in Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom is developed using the information collected with two main instruments: a database and a bank of programs from the schedules of 25 television channels from the countries mentioned during the period 1990 to 2020. These two instruments belong to the Euromonitor Observatory, which is directed and formed by a large proportion of the project’s researchers. It is a permanent television observatory in Europe, operating since 1989, created by a group of European researchers (Paolo Baldi, Ian Connell, Claus Dieter Rath and Emili Prado) at the request of the RAI VQPT service.

Its headquarters were based in Geneva until 1995 when it was transferred to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona where it operates under the direction of Emili Prado. Apart from the general coordination core at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Matilde Delgado, Núria Garcia, Gemma Larrègola, Belén Monclús y Celina Navarro), throughout these 30 years other researchers have participated in Euromonitor: Daniela Brancati, Peter Dahlgren, David Fernández, Michel Gheude, Amparo Huertas, Maurizio Manetti, Georg Michael Luyken, Juan José Perona y Herman Spinhof. Likewise, they have participated with their technical assistance Isidre Monreal, Pau Martí e Ignacio Bergillos.
